Amy Seidel
LIFE IS A DANCE

These paintings are lyrics stuck in my head, of songs that I
heard when I didn’t have the courage to get up and dance.

The motion and spontaneity reflect the joy of living in the
moment.  The characters in the paintings are brazen carefree
happy souls.  The colors reflect the music.

I am strongly influenced by the expressionists, particularly
Chaim Soutine. I studied art at Kendall College and The Royal
College of Art and Design where I fell in love with figure
painting.

Metal sculpture later became a passion and business which
lured me to the exotic city of New Orleans.  Dancing figures
have always been a favorite for my art.

John was a street person who had given up
on life. He lived on the street near Amy's
apartment.  He had been a contractor but life
took some bad turns and he became a
homeless alcholoic.  This is a "pre-Katrina"
work.

Artist Spotlight

Amy Seidel has had an adventurous life. Her lastest adventure started when living in New
Orleans. Awoken late at night, the waters were rising quickly from Katrina.  With only
enough time to fill a backpack and grab her two dogs, she started making her way to the
Astrodome.

She was only permitted to enter if she abandoned her animals.  This was unacceptable
to her.  She and a friend managed to convince a taxi driver to take them to another city
to get to a car that a friend had left for them to escape.  Just in time, as the bridge they
crossed later collapsed.

After locating the car and keys, they proceded but could not find a place to stay as
everything was already booked from other survivors.  They traveled non-stop to
Hendersonville, NC where Amy's parents live.  Much to her parents relief she arrived
rattled but physically unharmed.

She lost all her possesions and the balance of her art and metal working eqipment.  We
are proud to have two of her surviving works - XR2 and Fantasy Building.  It is very
interesting to note the different style of work from before Katrina to after.

Life has improved for Amy, she now resides in Asheville, NC where she is rebuilding her
life and art.
